How to fix out-of-sync subtitles automatically
Subtitles that lag, lead, or drift further out of sync as the movie goes on are the most common subtitle problem there is. AI Subtitle Studio's Sync Subtitles tool fixes them automatically by listening to the audio and aligning every subtitle cue to the actual speech — no guessing offsets in your player, and no internet connection needed.
Why subtitles go out of sync
Three classic causes:
- Constant offset — the subtitle was timed for a version with a different intro (studio logos, recaps). Every line is off by the same few seconds.
- Framerate mismatch — the subs were made for a 25 fps broadcast but your file is 23.976 fps. The error grows steadily; subs drift further out the longer you watch.
- Different cut — extended editions and TV edits add or remove scenes, so parts of the file sync and parts don't.
Manual "+2.5 seconds" fixes in your player only handle the first case. The other two need re-timing across the whole file — exactly what automatic alignment does.
How acoustic sync works
Under the hood, Sync Subtitles uses ffsubsync, a well-established open-source alignment tool bundled with the app. It extracts the audio from your exact video file and builds a map of where speech happens. It then matches your subtitle cues against that speech map and computes the correction — a shift, a linear stretch (fixing framerate drift), or both — and rewrites the timestamps. The result is a subtitle file timed to your copy of the video, not someone else's. Everything runs locally on your machine; no audio or subtitle data is uploaded anywhere.
Fix subtitle sync step by step
- Load the video and the subtitle Drop the video into the app together with the out-of-sync .srt (or extract the drifting embedded track).
- Run Sync Subtitles The app analyzes the audio track and matches the subtitle timing against detected speech — no manual input needed.
- Save the re-timed file The corrected .srt is written next to your video. Play it — dialogue and text now land together.
