Translate
The Translate screen turns a subtitle track in one language into a fully-timed track in another, using DeepSeek's AI over the internet. Unlike transcription and syncing, this feature requires your own DeepSeek API key and a connection — see AI Providers to set one up first.
Loading files
Three ways to add files, using the icon buttons in the top-right of the header (or the buttons in the empty state):
- Open video files — pick one or more videos; each is scanned for subtitle tracks.
- Open subtitle files only — pick .srt/.vtt/.ass/.ssa/.sub/.txt files directly, no video needed.
- Open folder — scans a folder for videos and adds every one found.
If a file has multiple subtitle tracks, a Track Selection dialog lets you pick which one to use as the source. Each file appears as a card with a checkbox (for bulk actions), name, duration, and block count.
Choosing languages and style
The header has Source and Target language dropdowns and a Context text field — these apply in bulk to every currently checked file at once. A gear icon opens a settings popup with:
- Style — Faithful (stays close to source phrasing, best for documentary/educational content), Natural (default; rephrases freely for native-sounding fluency, best for dialogue-heavy drama), or Cinematic (polished, expressive subtitle language, may condense phrasing to fit the moment — best for film and prestige TV).
- Batch size — subtitles translated per API call: 5 (safest) to 20 (fastest), default 10.
- Parallel batches — concurrent API calls: 1 (safe) to 5 (fast), default 3.
- Context lines — how many preceding lines are included for context: 0–5, default 2.
- Metric units — converts imperial to metric (mi→km, °F→°C, lb→kg) for target languages that use it. On by default.
Each file card also has its own optional context note field, separate from the bulk header field.
The "Whisper-generated" toggle
If a subtitle came from AI transcription and may still contain speech-recognition artifacts (filler words, misheard names), check its Whisper-generated box on that file's card. This switches translation to a single combined pass that corrects those errors and translates at the same time — one API call instead of a separate cleanup step first.
Translating one file or many
The main Translate button adapts to your selection: translating the one focused file if nothing is checked, the single checked file if exactly one is checked, or all checked files in sequence ("Translate (N)") if more than one is checked. A progress modal shows per-subtitle and per-batch progress (plus per-file progress during a bulk run), with a Cancel button.
Each file's translation is saved automatically as a new subtitle file next to the source as soon as that file finishes — you don't need to manually export.
