Embed
Embed goes the other way from Extract: it adds subtitle files to a video as tracks you can switch on in any player. It is free to use, needs no license, and does not re-encode — the picture and sound are copied exactly.
Adding videos and subtitles
Click Add videos, or drop videos or a folder on the window. Subtitle files sitting beside each video, such as Film.en.srt for Film.mkv, are offered automatically with a tick. Add subtitle file on a row adds another from anywhere, and Remove this subtitle takes one off. A video with none beside it says No subtitle file beside this video. Add one to embed it.
Each subtitle has a language, taken from its file name and changeable, so players list it properly. Make default sets which track players show without being asked.
Where the result goes
Where the result goes offers two choices:
- Save as a new file — writes
Name.subs.extbeside the video, leaving the original alone. - Replace the original — each video is written in full beside the original, checked, and only then swapped in under its name. A failure or Stop leaves the original as it was. You need free space for one copy of the largest video.
Remove old tracks leaves out the subtitle tracks the video already had. Videos are processed one at a time, because the disk is the limit; a 1 GB episode takes about as long as copying it.
Containers and styling
| Matroska (MKV) | Keeps ASS subtitles as ASS and takes the rest as SubRip. |
|---|---|
| MP4 / MOV | Play only a simple text format: italic and bold survive, ASS styling does not. The row says so. |
| WebM | Takes WebVTT only. |
| AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG | Cannot hold subtitles. A new MKV is made instead, and Replace is not offered. |
Subtitle files are read in any encoding and written to the video as UTF-8.
Safety
Nothing is written over a video in place. The new file is built under a hidden temporary name, checked — every video and audio stream kept, the right number of subtitles — and only then renamed. If the app is closed or crashes midway, the leftover temporary file is cleaned up the next time it starts.
